Petratherm wants to get steam from the same block of granite where they got radium to make luminescent paint at Hunters Hill in Sydney. Rann seems untroubled by his no-nukes policy the same time pushing granite geothermal. Alas I think its true potential is for warm baths a la Portland.
I see Big Al (no relation to Big Gav) is head of the queue for special treatment under carbon trading. I suggest they take it on the chin and ask for a temporary tariff. Having learned nothing from squandering North Sea gas I see the Brits now want to help squander ours.
BTW the middle zone of Australia (not Perth or Sydney) is in major rainfall deficit.
Big Al isn't a relation of mine but we used to be good mates (basketball team-mates) many years ago.
Back then (IIRC) he used to do Alcoa's negotiating with the unions - presumably because he wasn't going to be intimidated by anyone (though I'd add he was a very nice guy - just not someone that was accustomed to being told what to do).
As for our gas, see my post on the BG / Origin takeover today...
