I am not sure about nationalising everything. Electricity and water and other utilities are obvious candidates for nationalisation. But the car industry? I seem to remember Ladas being very unpopular. Much better to get out of the industry and do something else.

Why not use tax breaks to make electric cars more popular?

I don't think Christine suggested nationalising everything (if she did I missed it) - just that it would be a good idea to invest in public transport and clean energy infrastructure.

She did mention electric cars, but I don't think its Greens' policy to own GM, Ford and Toyota - just to encourage them to build non-polluting cars (I'd suggest a carbon tax rather than industry specific tax breaks though)...

This has been a stimulating quote to select Gav. Thanks.

Also I'm pleased to see that the Google News search now pops up a direct link to this piece on the first page of its results, when one searches for "Peak Oil". You're finally getting the recognition you deserve!

- But hopefully not because of a decline of PO interest now that the petrol price has dropped.
(I'm eerily reminded of all the joyful natives collecting stranded fish just before the Tsunami hits...)
