Gav this is a really interesting post. Buckminster Fuller was a "global" thinker on so many levels.
And shouldn't we be starting up a company to exploit his "wind turbine on every power transmission tower" idea? I've got a feeling that helical ones would fit inside the existing tower structure without any structural mods...

The wind turbines in tranmission tower idea is an interesting one - I'm not sure what it would do to the dynamics of the grid, but on the surface its a great idea and modern, lightweight turbines would seem like an ideal fit.
