From the sound of statments from Harper he plans to keep on playing defence on the climate change issue. I think he is hoping they can kick it around until it goes away and is no longer a public concern. I am biased but polititians, especially from the right have a cynical view of the public and really believe that we can't stay focused on an issue for long.
That is why he appointed his best defensive player as Environment Minister.
The line seems to be that they won't do anything until some tecnological break through lets us deal GW a knock out punch. Sounds like Bush and the Aussie Howard.
I turned down an invitation to drive over to Barrie ON to see David Suzuki. Not that I don't like and admire Suzuki or disagree with him much but if I drove my Corolla I would create 30Kg of CO2 going and in my friends van it would be 60Kg. IMO he should have recorded his presentation in Vancouver and offered free DVD versions to anyone who asked. This would save all the CO2 from his bus too. But maybe he is planning an Al Gore movie. He has given very effective interviews to the CBC about this tour in any event.

Jografy, do read Dmitry Orlov, who shares your sentiment in an excellent, albeit dark essay:

COLLAPSE AND ITS DISCONTENTS

I was recently invited to fly to Alaska to do a presentation, but declined the invitation, because it seemed ridiculous to me to burn a few more barrels of kerosene and drown a few more polar bears for the sake of informing a group of Alaskans that it's time for them to consider moving south. To inspire them, I could have told them stories of settlements in the Russian arctic that froze when their winter fuel deliveries failed to happen.
[...]
I somehow felt that drowning a few more polar bears for the sake of telling Alaskans what Alaskans should know better than me in any case was the wrong thing to do: the hypothetical benefits of my trip did not justify the quantifiable harm to the environment. But everyone I discussed this with seemed less than pleased with my decision: I got points for being consistent, and not much else.

HeIsSoFly .. thanks I did read that. It is a dark piece but certainly thought provoking. I admire Suzuki and many others but I think we know a lot of the issues and ideas. The thing is to personally do what can be done and work locally. TOD,EB etc provide lots of input and document the debate and there are so many action sites that it is hard to focus.
Cheers.
