Insights Regarding Future World Oil Production Based on ASPO Denver Presentations

"Peak oil can be a very tricky topic, the way I talk about it and deal with it at the end of the day is: We need to revolutionize the way we consume and produce energy... We need to really be the leaders in saying: the future for our children and our grandchildren as far as energy consumption and as far as production, it looks like this" with those words Colorado Governor Bill Ritter started his closing speech at the ASPO conference in Denver that took place from 10 to 12 October 2009.

Telling our children and grandchildren where they will draw their heat, electricity and liquid fuels from was not a topic of discussion in Denver. Nonetheless, much information was conveyed on the relationship between the economics crisis and the future of oil. This post is an attempt to summarize the main points on oil and the economy from the conference presentations--concluding that there are three distinct future trajectories as we go forward.

At the Denver conference, world oil production was discussed from both the supply side (what flow rate can be reached) and the demand side (how much can the economy afford). It is really the combination of the two that is important--so I bring together both in this post.

U.S. Peak Oil Conference Conflicted Amidst The Oil Recession

This is a guest post by Jan Lundberg. It originally was published in Culture Change.

Upon the first global recession influenced by the peaking of oil extraction and record high prices, the question for "peak oilers" arises: does peak oil and energy decline mean great profits for modernizing industry, or is peak oil the beginning of huge changes in lifestyle toward sustainability after societal collapse?

Those were the two main concerns at play at the fifth annual meeting of the U.S. chapter of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas (ASPO-USA), in Denver, Oct. 11-13.

Peak Oil - Politics, Geopolitics, and Choke Points Video

This is a 26 minute video, featuring four speakers at last fall's ASPO-USA conference in Sacramento. One of them (shown on the opening screen) is our own Jeff Vail, talking about Geopolitics. The others are Morey Wolfson, showing a google earth video of oil's planetary choke points, an interview with Tom Whipple in which he mentions that oil scarcity is already being felt around the world, and talk by Representative Terry Becker on how to bring peak oil as an issue to a legislature.

The Oil Drum - At ASPO-USA Sacramento

Before we leave the topic of the ASPO-USA Conference in Sacramento, I wanted to make sure a few things didn't get missed. The big one was that The Oil Drum was one of the recipients of the M. King Hubbert Award, for Excellence in Energy Education. The other recipient of the Hubbert award was Global Public Media.

In this post, I include Dr. Kyle Saunders' (Prof. Goose's) acceptance speech. I also show photos of TOD participants and give brief summaries and links to the presentations TOD folks gave.

It features a discussion of peak oil, an interview with Sarah Palin, Matt Simmons, Randy Udall, and a closer look at oil company profits, and a discussion of alternatives. It was shown on CNBC yesterday, and will be shown again today, Thursday, Sept. 25 at 1 a.m. ET and on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. ET.

2. Heading Out's discussion of Day 2 of the ASPO-USA conference, which can be found below the fold.

Gloom and Doom - with a smile - the ASPO-USA 4 meeting in Sacramento

The ASPO conference in Sacramento began here Sunday, September 21, just after lunch – with a set of three concurrent sessions. Unfortunately I could only be in one place, and that was tied by structure, so my report on this afternoon is thus a little constrained.

The first track dealt with Reporting the Oil Story, and while the speaker list was strong, including Rob Collier, Bart Anderson of the Energy Bulletin, and Neil King of the WSJ, in the first session – having to sneak through the back of a mass to get to the room may have limited attendance a little. The second part of that track included presentations by Stuart Leavenworth of the Sacramento Bee; Lisa Margonelli of the New America foundation; Tom Whipple, who gives us the Peak Oil Daily News, and Review.
