NYC Residents Want More Solar

New York City is a politically progressive city and many people here truly want to do the right thing about global warming. At the same time, New Yorkers are notoriously pragmatic and they don't just want feel-good or impractical ideas thrust upon them. In a way New Yorkers are your savvy environmentalists. Plus, as I've explained before, NYC is a fairly energy efficient place already, just by virtue of our smaller living spaces in multiunit buildings and heavy reliance on mass transit instead of automobiles.

That's why I wasn't surprised to see in a recent poll that New Yorkers are somewhat ahead of the country on several Peak oil awareness measures, including having "heard of or read about the US Energy Crisis" and believing that it is "very serious" and they overwhelmingly believe it is "likely their city or town will face a serious critical energy crisis in the next five years".

The Oil Drum Meets Philly Regional Planning

Today I attended a historic moment in US transportation history. In attendance were all the local transportation authorities at the federal, state and local level in the region around Philadelphia. The final segment of the I-95/PA Turnpike Interchange was approved by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), thus completing the Federal Interstate Highway System as it was designed in the 1950s. In one of those great ironic twists of fate, I was invited there to present the concept of peak oil on behalf of The Oil Drum community and to urge them to address their oil addiction by reducing automobile dependency. Typical Top-Down Planning - Just as one project is finally completed, it no longer fits the community's needs!

Wind Powered Liberty: Victory

It's official, Lady Liberty will be running on wind power starting in March. Those of you who have been with me from the beginning will remember this classic PO-NYC post where I posed the idea for freeing lady liberty from the chains of fossil fuel:

What if we could power the Statue of Liberty with just Wind and Solar power?

EPA's Green Power Partnership

Environmental Economics reports that the EPA has recently published a list of their top 25 Green Power Partners (out of 607 organizations that participate in the program). The Green Power Partners are basically companies that are using electricity generated from renewable resources. From the EPA website:
Top 25 Partners are Partners whose annual green power purchase is the largest, and whose green power purchase has been completed. Their actions are helping drive the development of new renewable energy sources for electricity generation. Combined, their purchases amount to 3.3 million megawatt-hours (MWh) annually, which is approximately 75 percent of the green power commitments made by all Partners.
Interestingly, the amount of green energy used by the top 25 companies ranges from 2% of their total electricity purchase (Safeway) to 100% (Whole Foods, the World Bank Group, Advanced Micro Devices, WhiteWave, the Tower Company, Hyatt/DFW hotel, Western Washington University), with the average being 44% (but the median only 27%). Which leads me to wonder how much renewable energy the remaining 582 companies are using. But at least they're apparently trying.
