How Technology Increases Oil Production

How can you double something and still have ten times less than you started with?

The answer to this question will help us reassess claims that advances in oil field technology will postpone the peak in global oil production. The question itself arises from a case study of Enhanced Oil Recovery in the Handil Oil Field in Indonesia.

The Coal Crunch is Materializing

In recent days a series of media articles surfaced pointing to a concerning situation in China. The New Scientist reported:

At the end of a cold and stormy winter, the country has just 12 days of coal reserves at most power stations. Some provinces, including Hebei, bordering Beijing, have less than a week's coal left. This is a record low, the state electricity regulatory commission revealed on Tuesday.

Declining net oil exports--a temporary decline or a long term trend?

This is a post coauthored by myself and by Friend of TOD Jeffrey J. Brown (westexas), an independent petroleum geologist in the Dallas, Texas area.

To answer the question in the title of this paper, we believe, for reasons outlined below, that the current decline in world net oil exports is probably the start of a long term trend, as a result of declining production and/or increasing consumption in key exporting countries.

EIA data show a small decline in world net oil exports from 2005 to 2006, led by a 3.3% per year decline rate in net exports from the top three net oil exporters--Saudi Arabia, Russia and Norway. Furthermore, recent data suggest that the net export decline is continuing, and probably accelerating.

Declining Net Oil Exports Versus “Near Record High” Crude Oil Inventories: What is going on?

Building on prior work by Matt Simmons and Kenneth Deffeyes, I have written a number of articles on Net Oil Exports, often with my frequent co-author, “Khebab,” most recently, “Net Oil Exports and the Iron Triangle.” We are going to present a quantitative assessment of future net exports by the top net exporters at the ASPO-USA (Association for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas) conference in October, in Houston, Texas, and we will be doing a preview of the paper in late September.

A small supplement on LNG supplies

Dave has been posting about our coverage of the natural gas problem, and some un-natural sources.  He has explained some of the problems of LNG and it is this I would like to re-visit to reinforce the concern about supply. It starts with a Chinese problem, that may end up biting both the US and Japan.
